Welcome

GRADS is like a classroom without walls. We help our students make connections in their community, find reliable information online and show them how to be lifelong learners throughout their parenting journey. There are also other methods of teaching our students without the traditional textbook. Follow my classroom blog as we stretch the boundaries of teaching and learning.

Observances

How To Use National Observances in Your Lessons.

There are hundreds of National Observances recognized every year.  Observances can create “teachable moments” or be the focus of any unit in the field of Family and Consumer Sciences.

You can look at the list of observances in two different ways. One is to look at the list by month and choose observances that correlate with what you are planning to teach. Or look at the list and let it guide what unit you want to cover during the year.
For instance, if I look at October I see that it is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. First I search online for any observance information, activities or lessons that may be available. I then look at my curriculum and standards to determine how to pull this all together. Another way is to look at your curriculum map to see if there is any correlation with the topics that you want to cover during the year.
For some observances it can be a short discussion of its history at the beginning or end of class. If you want to recognize Candy Corn Day on October 30th it can tie into a discussion of Halloween safety. And then, of course, you can make a treat with candy corn for the students.
My students will search the internet for information about an observance, complete the Observance Awareness worksheet, and share with each other. Check out the list of Observances for the month of October.  Visit this blog, Year of Living Unofficially
